2013 is without a doubt Trouble & Bass’ year. The Brooklyn-based label and DJ collective has so many upcoming releases and is making so many big moves that I had to chat with Luca Venezia of Drop The Lime fame and founder of the dark creative collective to make sure I had everything straight. And after witnessing the face melting awesomeness at their BASS CLASH event with Mixpak a few weeks ago, I’ve gotta say that these dark Dons are leaders in their field and definitely ones to watch.
So about two weeks ago I ran into the T&B crew at the NYC debut event for Night Slugs, another bass collective from the UK with L-Vis 1990, Bok Bok and Girl Unit filling their ranks. While that party was insane, it’s a story for another day because I found out that the following night T&B planned to join forces with their brethren in bass, Mixpak, and throwdown old-school style in a warehouse off Metropolitan Ave. And yes, you better believe I was there.
Showing up fashionably late at around 3am, the thumping music could be heard from a block away and the only people out were those heading to the party. This lineup was absolutely stacked, and in the foggy confines of a little white-walled warehouse I arrived to hear Stryker Matthews killing it on the decks.
Star Eyes and Jubilee followed with one of the most energetic and straight fun back2backs I’ve seen in awhile. And get this, these awesome ladies plan to release an EP together in the coming months. I swear, if their production is anything like the set they dropped that night…it is going to be a MUST HAVE. Also, fuck yeah, girl power!
Next up, Drop The Lime took the decks with promising up-and-comer Tony Quattro. Tony reps more of the house-oriented spectrum but also has an EP to be released on T&B February 19th, so you know he’s got the vibe. If you somehow missed out, this rad new mix from DTL will give you a little bit of a clue as to their set, but even the best mix can’t capture the energy of a hundred fans going apeshit until dawn.
The last set I caught was the b2b between Scrap and Chris of DKDS and Curses! Curses! is actually Luca’s techno and deep house alias and he’ll be dropping “Gotham City Creepers” featuring the lovely Star Eyes under that name in March.
The party reached a whole other level with these gents seamlessly melding booty bangers and dark sexy vibes, captivating us all well into the hours of the dawn. Regrettably, I somehow missed Rizzla, The Good Kids, Dre Skull, Strange VIP and Cranks, but heard they all rocked…and with the way this night went, I’m pretty inclined to believe it. As a consolation, I’ve been listening to Strange VIP’s ‘No Future’ EP on repeat the last few days – lovin’ it!
And if that wasn’t cool enough for you – on my way out, in a addition to a lil stripper chick shaking her ass in a corner, I noticed that Curt from Flosstradamus and DJ Sliink had stopped by to support and just get down with their bad selves. I’m going to have a seriously hard time topping this party fo real. Just goes to show you that there’s no sleep for the wicked and Trouble & Bass never sleep!
